The Master of Midwifery is designed for registered midwives who wish to continue professional and academic development by furthering clinical, research, teaching or administrative roles. Its purpose is to extend and enhance the competencies of midwifery graduates and prepare for advanced practice and leadership positions.

What Qualifications Do I Require For Admission?

  • Be registered as a nurse and midwife with Nurses and Midwives Board of WA.
  • Applicants who do not have a Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Midwifery degree or equivalent may be eligible for admission on the basis of recognised prior learning and submission of a proven portfolio.
  • Registered midwives are eligible to enter Year 2 of the Master of Midwifery (coursework) if they have completed a minimum of twelve months full-time post-registration midwifery clinical experience. Midwives who do not have an Undergraduate degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery are given advanced standing for the theory and practice units.
  • Applicants will be expected to be proficient in English and evidence of this will be sought if the applicant’s undergraduate degree was taught in a language other than English. Overseas applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language (e.g., IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 550).
  • Students without an ECU midwifery qualification must complete additional ECU postgraduate units prior to commencing Year 2. A list of approved units is available from the course co-ordinator.
  • All students in Year 2 must have concurrent employment as a midwife in an approved clinical setting for a minimum of sixteen hours per week.
  • The status of overseas qualifications will be referred to the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition if any doubt exists about suitability.

What Career Pathways Are Available?

Midwives with a Masters degree may choose to specialise in education, management, research and clinical practice.

Mode of Study / Location

The Master of Midwifery (coursework) is a two-year full-time or equivalent part-time course available by internal or external study at the Joondalup campus.
